- Nueces para El Amor
-
Last night, Daniela and I watched a movie which, wins the "Strangest Ending" trophy.
The movie is actually very captivating (if nothing else, for the very attractive actors).
It's the story of a woman (Alicia) who puts an end to a relatioship with a young man (Marcelo) because of her struggle and companionship with a militant (Horacio).
The militant becomes a statistic (in the junta-governed Argentina of the 70s) and she keeps on running into Marcelo over the years. She finally gets very depressed after Menem announces the pardon to the generals responsible for the "desaparecidos" and attempts suicide.
To make a long story short, she runs away from a psychiatric hospital and goes to the train station where she sits inside a car for Marcelo, who obviously arrives. Then, as if by some strange coincidence, they both get up and start running towards the train's control room. Alicia and Marcelo, as if by years of training as train engineers, pull switches and levers and get the train running and both start screaming!!! Up until then, the movie was actually interesting, but the ending... killed it!

-
I missed the plane to come back on Sunday, August 7th.
The first available flight was Wednesday, 10th. So, instead, I went to Puerto La Cruz with Daniela, Sandra, Giuditta and the kids. Was I upset? You judge...
The trip back was kind of a pain. Starting Tuesday night, I had to wait for a late flight to Caracas, two and a half hours. Then, take a cab at 11:00, get home at 11:30, prepare the suitcase, read something, go to sleep, get up at 2:30, take a cab, fly to Miami first and then to Chicago.
Wow! By the time I got home, I had a throbbing headache!!!

-
Venezuela, where we are vacationing right now, is going through a really hard time. Besides years now of social strife because of resistance to the current president, Hugo Chavez, its infrastructure is falling apart.
As we were driving, almost two weeks ago, Jorge, my father in-law, pointed out a depression and a swell on the surface of a viaduct that connects the coastal airport town of La Guaira with Caracas. It is scary! The highly trafficked road is becoming unstable because of rainfall and debris due to unregulated urban developments around it. The posts supporting the bridge are giving way, producing a ripple effect on the asphalt.
In other parts of the country, other highways are showing similar signs of wear-and-tear. Near Los Teques, rain produced a huge cave in in a highway, generating hours of traffic jam. What's worse is that as the car lines approached the poor neighborhood of Los Teques, armed thieves walked from car to car, pointing their guns to the drivers, demanding all their valuables! Unbelievable!
