Red Dancer [Chicago, December 1991]
I wanted to play with spray paint and the first impulse was to cut out the dark areas in a photograph I found in a magazine and spray paint some boards with it.

Three years before, in Brazil, I shot a series of photographs on street grafitis. One artist used spray-painterd stencils to comment on popular culture, mixing political and street-slang messages with his spray-painted figures.

The Skeptre [Chicago, September 1989]
This is what I would call "a strange case of my own mental backyard": I had drawn a quick impulsive line with no purpose in mind.

With time, this line drawing would resurface and finally, I decided it looked like a mysterious figure holding a magical skeptre.

At the time I colored it, I was interested in rendering images with tones of the simple color, adding flashes of other colors to create some dynamics (as in the border red and orange patterns).

Sur La Place [Chicago, Illinois, June 1989]
