Desperation [Milan, Italy, March 1984]
I remember copying the subject from a photo I saw on my favorite Italian magazine, L'illustrazione Italiana.

It is a little dramatic. I think I was playing with colors as a means of conveying mood, as you can tell from the exaggerated tones of skin and clothes.

I remember being particularly proud of the background at the top, where I dabbed red, black and white paint which gave a nice three-dimentional effect.

The Passage of The Rhinos [Milan, Italy, March 1984]
I remember seeing this wonderful engraving (or woodcut) of a rhino on a magazine printed by Franco Maria Ricci.

It became an obsession, so I incorporated in this surreal landscape.

Locorotondo [Countryside near Locorotondo, Puglia, Italy, June 1983]
The trip in which I painted this watercolor was very meaningful for me. To get there we travelled throughout a summer night. When we got to this region with the first morning light, it looked like we had arrived on the moon: The barren landscape, populated by ancient olive trees and lined by rock walls was nothing like I had ever seen before.

We stayed in a trullo (a typical regional farm house) of an English friend of my mother's. From it, you could see this view, and in the evening the sunsets were red like fire.
